Order From Chaos, Part I

fiber art

Order From Chaos. 2003. Fiber.

Order from Chaos is a piece I created in 2003. It began when my friend, Val McGaughey, led our Art Women crit group in a meditation, which culminated in each of us drawing our personally meaningful symbols. Here’s what I came up with:
personal symbols

I thought it would be interesting to combine these symbols with some of my “stream of consciousness” doodling, like these:
pencil doodles

At the time, I was fascinated by the possibilities of printing my photos and drawings directly onto fabric using an inkjet printer, and that’s what I did here. After printing my pencil sketches onto muslin, I cut it up and pieced it back together in a new arrangement:

Finally, I embroidered over all the sketching with cotton thread. In the finished work, the printed sketches aren’t really visible, but provided the model for me to “trace” with thread:

But why do this at all? Hmmmm… (To be continued…)
